The Personal Journey 365, the breastplate
The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory. Romans 8: 16-17, NIV
It is staggering the number of individuals in this day and age who consider themselves unworthy of God’s love, and amazing grace. When first an individual believes and receives Jesus Christ into their hearts, they put on the breastplate of righteousness. The righteousness of Jesus Christ dwells now within them through the power of the Holy Spirit. With this Breastplate of Righteousness nothing is impossible. Yet today even many born-again Christians still fall prey to the lie of believing they are unworthy. This deception is straight from the Enemy’s camp.
As long as the Enemy has an individual believing they are unworthy before God and unworthy of His abundant life, then hope is squelched and the door is wide open for continual attack. So how does one begin to believe they are worthy?
First, “Words do have power.” What is verbally spoken does make a difference in an individual’s own life, as well as in the lives of others. The first line of defense is in thoughts; take every thought captive to the obedience of Jesus Christ (2 Corinthians 10:5). If someone begins to believe lies about themselves that come from an oft-distorted sense of self-worth, the Enemy’s sometimes relentless provocation, or even the abusive words coming from others, then the victim becomes vulnerable to “Stinking-thinking.”
Second, “Ask and you shall receive.” As born-again, Holy Spirit filled believers, the individual is worthy in God’s eyes because they hold the Lord’s own righteousness Jesus Christ within their hearts. The Holy Spirit can and will provide them with everything they need to discover who they really are in Christ. All they need do is ask.
Third, “Surrender!” The more an individual surrenders to the obedience of Jesus Christ the more their minds are renewed and their thought patterns take on a whole new dimension. Through Christ’s perspective they begin to see their lives, their relationships, their circumstances from a completely different viewpoint. A sense of clarity, definition, direction, and utter peace floods every corner of their being. Any sense of unworthiness is completely erased.
And fourth, “Read the Bible.” The Bible tells the individual who they are in Christ as believers. Reading scriptures aloud ingrains God’s word in the mind and heart of the believer. The body, the mind, and the circumstances respond to these words of affirmation. These words have the transforming power to overcome any sense of unworthiness. It is seared into the heart of the believer “I belong to God; therefore, I AM WORTHY!”
This is a continuous battle that every believer faces that can only be won by surrender to Jesus Christ –the Breastplate of Righteousness– one-day-at-a-time.
